A World Bank blog describes how teams from the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank used drones to map key communes in Haiti’s Grand’Anse and Sud departments after Hurricane Matthew struck in 2016. Satellite imagery was limited by poor bandwidth, cloud cover and low resolution.
In four days the teams covered a total of seven villages and two cities. By comparing the drone images with pre-hurricane orthophotos, the team could determine which schools, and therefore which municipalities, had suffered the worst damage, according to the blog.
