FutureWater’s ThirdEye project supports farmers in Mozambique and Kenya. In Mozambique, drones gave farmers aerial data on crop condition, mainly through NDVI, so they could decide where and when to apply limited resources.

According to FutureWater, the Mozambique work ran from 2014 to 2017 with funding from USAID, Sida and the Dutch Government’s foreign affairs ministry through the Securing Water for Food programme. The page says six active local operators were serving more than 3,500 farmers over more than 1,600 hectares. A Securing Water for Food evaluation (survey of 62 farmers in July and August 2018 around Xai-Xai and Chokwé in Gaza province) found that 59% of interviewed farmers increased their yields, with other factors also playing a part, and that 77% considered the service beneficial; changes in water use could not be quantified.
