Cyclone Idai hit the Mozambican coast on 15 March 2019. According to FutureWater, local drone operators trained by FutureWater and Hiview, stationed in Chimoio, flew missions on 23 and 24 March in support of Mozambique’s national disaster management institute (INGC).

They used drone imagery to localise stranded communities in areas inaccessible by road. FutureWater reports that this information was used to improve the routing of rescue boats for food supply and evacuation, and that the imagery showed a river expanding to up to 250 metres in width.
