A flash flood and mudslide struck Mai Mahiu in central Kenya on 29 April 2024 during widespread flooding. According to a July 2024 report on the IFRC Solferino Academy site, the Kenya Red Cross Society worked closely with ICHA to deploy drones through its remotely piloted aircraft unit, and the team captured and processed imagery of the disaster area, which made possible the evacuation of a school and hospital downstream.
ADF Magazine quotes the Kenya Red Cross emergency response manager, speaking to The Standard: “We use drones extensively. We rushed and mapped the Mai Mahiu area following the dam incident.” He said this enabled the Red Cross to advise the government through Kenya Defence Forces incident commanders and to alert the Rift Valley Academy and Kijabe Hospital just before another landslide happened.
