On 7 September 2023 Police Scotland received a report of a hillwalker who had not returned from a trip in the Scottish Highlands. Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team led a large search with other rescue teams, helicopters and search dogs, and scaled back after ten days. Members of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association drone group, drawn from Cockermouth and Duddon and Furness mountain rescue teams, later offered to help with search software they had developed.
According to The Herdwick and grough, the software flies a drone over an area along a preset path, taking overlapping photographs, and flags unusually coloured clusters of pixels for the team to review. On the morning of 24 October 2023 one drone team reported a possible find in Glen Etive and the other diverted its drone to confirm it. Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team and police were informed and the walker’s body was recovered. grough reports that the spot had been searched on foot at least twice.
