Swiss Air-Rescue Rega presented a new search drone at its 2019 annual media conference. According to Rega, it scans large search areas precisely and autonomously along a predefined route at 80 to 100 metres, can detect and avoid other aircraft, and carries a thermal camera whose images are analysed by software developed with ETH Zurich. Rega said further test flights were needed before use in search operations from 2020, and that the drone would supplement, not replace, the rescue helicopter.

A 2026 Swiss government article describes the system as in use: it adds a phone-locating device, uses an algorithm developed with ETH Zurich, and is deployed when poor visibility prevents helicopters from flying.
